Flying Demo This Saturday

The Planes of Fame Museum's TBM Avenger is featured for a "Flying Demo" this Saturday. The Planes of Fame Museum doors open at 10:00am. The Avenger will be on display for up-close viewing and photographs until 11:30am.

Then, at 11:45am we'll begin a brief presentation about this amazing aircraft and the dramatic role it played during WWII. Avengers were flown by the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps., and the Royal Navy from aircraft carriers and land bases from June 1942 until the war's end. Avengers dropped over 32,000 tons of bombs and torpedos and shot down ninety-eight enemy aircraft during the war. They continued in service until the 1950s with the military and in civilian roles until the 1980s.

The Museum's Avenger will start it's 1,900 horsepower radial engine at noon in front of Museum guests and then taxi away and fly directly over the Museum for twenty minutes.

This is a great way to see one of the most important aircraft in our military history fly. Hope to see you at the Museum on Saturday!

More Saturday Fun!

  • All the Museum's hangars are open for viewing. Guests can see the majority of the aircraft up-close and wander through many of the hangars while they learn about the collection and aviation history from our team of Museum Guides.

  • The Boeing B-17 will be open for visitors to enter and gain a unique perspective on the important role this aircraft played during World War II.

  • A number of "Living Historians" will be in WWII uniforms, to help us all appreciate and remember the sacrifices our veterans have made, and continue to make, on our behalf.

  • We'll be having a Used Book and Scale Aircraft Model Kits sale, and plenty of new merchandise in the Gift Shop!

Did You Know?

During World War II, Paul Newman was a turrett gunner on the TBM Avenger. Although his combat service was limited, and he narrowly escaped a Kamikaze attack on his assigned carrier, Newman channeled the fear and excitement of his military service into a successful acting, auto racing, and philanthropy career that lasted over thirty years.
