By Annamarie Buonocore
Welcome to Daytona Aircraft Services… That’s a nice way to start a feature story and interview with Daytona Aircraft Services. It’s also one of the first things you see on their website. Given the opportunity to dig a little deeper, In Flight USA was quick to recognize that the welcome message is actually reflected in the warm reception customers are greeted with when doing business with Daytona Aircraft Services, an FAA, Part 145 Aircraft Maintenance and Repair Facility located at Daytona Beach International Airport in Florida.
Daytona Aircraft Services is one of the most complete piston and turbine maintenance facilities in the Southeast, providing a wide range of maintenance and repair services from spinner to tail lamp. This month, we had the opportunity to interview Jake Clemens, an owner, Director of Maintenance and the Vice President of the company. Jake has been a part of Daytona Aircraft Services since 1998. He started working nights as an A&P mechanic, was promoted to lead mechanic, then shift supervisor before finally earning his current position as the Director of Maintenance.
In Flight USA is proud to “welcome” Daytona Aircraft Services and Jake Clemons to our pages this month.
In Flight USA: How did you land up in your current position with the company?
Jake Clemens: I came to Daytona Beach back in 1998 as an aspiring pilot to work on some ratings. I had been working as an aircraft mechanic while attending college at Bowling Green State University, so naturally I applied for a position here as soon as I arrived. Although I loved flying and obtained my Commercial/Multi/Instrument ticket, I found I didn’t have the patience for flight instruction and concentrated more on working as an A&P mechanic. I progressed to become an IA, an inspector for the repair station, a supervisor, and eventually an owner, VP, and DOM.
IFUSA: What do you like most about working in aviation?
JC: I am drawn to the thrill of flying and the excitement of the industry. I also enjoy the engineering and technical aspects of aircraft design and maintenance. Additionally, the aviation industry is constantly evolving and pushing the boundaries of technology, making it an exciting and dynamic field to work in.
IFUSA: What are your favorite airplanes to work on?
JC: I have had the opportunity to work on many aircraft ranging from Piper Cubs to Boeing 737’s. I have been allowed to work on historic warbirds and corporate jets. My favorite thing to work on is anything that can present a challenging problem that no one else has been able to solve; it is satisfying to be able to troubleshoot and resolve issues that others have not.
IFUSA: What advice would you give to those aspiring to have a career in aviation maintenance?
JC: Look for opportunities to gain practical experience, such as internships or apprenticeships. This will give you the chance to work with experienced professionals and learn the ins and outs of aviation maintenance. Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies. Attend conferences, workshops, and other training opportunities to stay current and informed. Build relationships with other professionals in the field, such as mentors or colleagues. These connections can provide valuable advice and opportunities throughout your career.
IFUSA: What do you like most about being in Daytona, Florida?
JC: Daytona Beach is known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant atmosphere. It's also home to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, one of the top aviation schools in the world. This means that there is a strong aviation community in Daytona Beach, which is appealing for those interested in aviation. Additionally, the city hosts several major events throughout the year, including the Daytona 500 and Bike Week, which draw in large crowds and create a lively atmosphere.
IFUSA: What are your goals for the company going forward?
JC: My goals for the company are to continue to evolve with the industry, grow, and be able to continue to provide our customers with the high level of service they have become accustomed to. We are constantly recruiting new talent to help us move forward.
IFUSA: Thank you! We wish you and Daytona Aircraft Services all the best.
