SPIRIT of Flight: Destination Hotel 1110 on the Monterey Bay!
By Denise DeGregoire
Welcome back high-flyers; 2024 is shaping up to be a doozy! It’s a leap year, and it’s the year of the dragon; signs are pointing to the skies and it’s time to take off. The eagle eyes at Spirit of Flight are always flying high and looking to spot the next destination while revisiting some of our favorite gems along the way. In this article we touch back down in Monterey Bay to visit our friends at Hotel 1110. There, we had the chance to sit down with owner, Nick Yaqub to talk about comfort, food and wine, and what’s new on the Del Monte strip.
So, fly with eagles or run with turkeys, but buckle up and set your coordinates for Monterey Bay, California. Let’s get into it.
Whether you arrive by air, sea, or road; an unforgettable experience awaits you at Hotel 1110 in Monterey Bay. Here you will find your curiosity stimulated and sensations delighted within the walls of this magical 17-room, adult only “Hotel with Personality.” Step through the wrought iron doors and expect to be swept away with visual and culinary delights mixed beautifully within the romantic atmosphere that awaits. An experience that comes with a unique and vast history to tell, in “an unassuming building marked 1110 on Del Monte Avenue.”
A love story envisioned, designed, and created by the late Lindarose Yaqub. Her husband, Dr. Nick Yaqub, carries on their dream to create a special place for all his guests.
Hotel 1110 is a Boutique Hotel that looks and feels like you walked in off the streets of Paris. It is one of my most favorite hotels with treasures to be found everywhere. I love walking in and immediately looking up to see the glorious red chandlers that illuminate the remodeled dining room. Each time I visit I feel as if I am ‘traveling the world’ in my own backyard.
Enjoy a glass of Nick’s favorite Pinot Noirs from Pisoni Family Vineyards to pair perfectly with dinner on LindaRose Rooftop Bar & Grill while watching layers of gold, orange, red and blue surround you as the sun’s reflection sets softly on the bay. You can follow that up with a relaxing jetted bath in your uniquely designed room, that will be sure to allow some of life’s tensions to drift away.
Hotel 1110 sits across from the Monterey Bay and Fisherman’s Wharf, as well as, walking distance to the ever-popular Monterey Bay Aquarium. From the hotel to Cannery Row you can find an array of adventures as you walk along the trail, visit art galleries, explore military and historical sights, wine tasting rooms and candy shops, or take a stroll along the sandy beach. There is something for everyone in Monterey Bay.
At Hotel 1110 you can expect to recharge and regenerate while enjoying a healing experience and personal touch from their dedicated and savvy staff.
While in town, my husband and I took in the opening round at this year’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, once called, “The Crosby Clambake.” It was named for Bing Crosby, but became famous for the array of famous actors, singers, comedians and sports figures of the day who would attend. A truly fun-natured party with a day of golf intertwined. The large galleries of spectators scattered in-and-around the sand dunes at Spanish Bay, weaving through the high pine trees of Spyglass Hill, or hovering over the rugged bluffs and shoreline at Pebble Beach, which has been rated, “the greatest public golf course in America” by Golf Digest. The views of the ruggedness intertwined with the manicured course were breath taking. It was exciting to experience the coast that way, I could only imagine what those early spectators felt. Magical.
If you have extra time and would like to wine taste, step on over to Comanche Cellars to meet winemaker, Michael Simons. He too started with a love affair with wine and hospitality that has turned into a passion for producing small lots of very handcrafted wines from neighboring vineyards. Michel’s tiny (1,800 cases) winery is named after Comanche, his horse when he was ten years old. A little birdy told me that Comanche Cellars’ Dog & Pony Negrette is out-of-this-world.
As Michael says, “Saddle up, come along for the ride, and see for yourself what all the buzz is about.”
So, if it’s a fun and adventure you seek or a quiet retreat, one can do no better than the Monterey Bay area and its attractions. The Hotel 1110 is an excellent jumping off point. It’s a romantic get-a-way. It’s a girl’s weekend. It’s a little family reunion, or fly solo and enjoy the oasis of amenities and luxuries on your own. Enjoy your stay!!
Fly well, BLUE Skies
