Help Us Preserve Amelia Earhart's Ties to Santa Monica
Did you know that Amelia Earhart departed from Santa Monica Airport (then known as Clover Field) on August 18, 1929, to compete in the first-ever Women’s Air Derby? This trailblazing event marked the first time women pilots were allowed to compete together in an air race, drawing thousands of spectators to witness this historic moment. Today, the Compass Rose, painted by the Santa Monica based LA99s, remains the only tribute in Santa Monica to this pivotal chapter in aviation history.
With your support, the Compass Rose was designated as a Santa Monica Historic Landmark on September 9, 2019. However, its landmark status is now under threat because of an appeal seeking to strip that designation. We need your help to protect the only landmark in Santa Monica recognizing the significant contributions of women to aviation.
Please join us in person on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at 7 PM at the Santa Monica City Hall (1685 Main Street, 2nd Floor Council Chambers, Santa Monica) to show your support for preserving this vital piece of history. Please wear a white shirt to show unity, and enjoy cupcakes with fellow supporters!
Can’t attend in person? No worries! You can still make a difference by submitting a letter or email in support of the Compass Rose’s landmark designation by noon on October 22, 2024. Frequently asked questions and a sample letter are attached for your convenience.
Together, we can ensure that the legacy of the women who helped shape aviation is honored and that Santa Monica's rich aviation history remains intact. Thank you for standing with us to preserve this historic landmark!
